Business subject Intent:
1-Our vision
- Aspiration - To inspire every pupil to become an informed citizen, consumer or owner. To provide pupils with essential knowledge and transferable skills with the aim of enhancing their employability; contributing to both personal development and future economic well-being. To expose students to a wide range of potential careers and opportunities and to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in context.
- Core knowledge – pupils will be taught:
- Unit R067 which is an exam unit whereby pupils will learn how a business market its products and services to its customers, and review the internal areas that enable a business to operate successfully.
- Unit R068 which is a coursework unit whereby pupils will learn about designing a product to a business challenge scenario. Pupils will identify a customer profile, complete market research and demonstrate understanding of costs and pricing strategies.
- Unit R069 which is a coursework unit whereby pupils will develop skills learnt in RO65, and to consider how a unique brand identity and promotional plan are important in business. The unit will allow pupil to demonstrate planning, delivering and reviewing a pitch.
- Procedural/Powerful knowledge – Pupils will learn to research and work independently with confidence. Pupils will learn to be organised, resilience and communicate knowledge accurately, while applying subject specific terminology fluently and in a variety of business contexts. Through contextualising subject content with practical ‘real-life’ business organisations at local, national and international level, students can be immersed in the true complexity of the business environment, allowing them to develop as enterprising individuals with the ability to think commercially and creativity to demonstrate business acumen.
- Developing cultural capital – Pupils will have access to guest speakers and a variety of different case studies, to bring the real business world to life. Pupils will have the opportunity to investigate local, and national businesses to base their coursework on and make a pitch to guests from the business world who will provide feedback and direction.
- Developing character- enables our pupils to develop a range of independent study skills, engage in a variety of different topics which will enable them to be more independent throughout their lives and apply their knowledge in their daily lives.
- Identifying and addressing context specific need – pupils are supported in lessons if there is the need. Tasks are mark banded which is differentiated in terms of ability specific expectations. The units in this course teach pupils about the power of advertising, basic financial understanding, legislation and working practices, allowing pupils to become more informed citizens and employees.
- Learning is sequential – The three units are sequenced in such a manner that allows students to use prior knowledge and develop their understanding while confidentially applying key terms, developing their literacy and communication skills. Students are taught the theory of enterprise and then use this knowledge when designing a product and delivering a proposal to a business challenge.
- Our key concepts and core domains of knowledge
At Key Stage 4, learners will study a Cambridge Nationals Award/Certificate in Enterprise and Marketing. Over the life of the course, learners will study:
- Unit R067 which is an exam unit whereby pupils will learn how a business market its products and services to its customers and review the internal areas that enable a business to operate successfully.
- Unit R068 which is a coursework unit whereby pupils will learn about designing a product to a business challenge scenario. Pupils will identify a customer profile, complete market research and demonstrate understanding of costs and pricing strategies when designing a proposal for a business challenge.
- Unit R069 which is a coursework unit whereby pupils will develop skills learnt in RO68, and to consider how a unique brand identity and promotional plan are important in business. The unit will allow pupil to demonstrate planning, delivering and reviewing a pitch, when preparing to pitch a viable proposal to an audience.
At Key Stage 5, learners will study a Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in Business. Over the life of the course, learners will study:
- Unit 1 which is an exam unit, whereby pupils will develop their knowledge about how businesses are run and the reasons why particular decisions are made.
- Unit 2 which is an exam unit, whereby pupils will develop their knowledge of protocols to be followed when working in business, and the skills, knowledge when underrating day to day roles in a business.
- Unit 3 which is an exam unit, whereby pupils will develop their knowledge decision making and the impact decisions can have on the short term and long-term success of a business.
- Unit 8 which is a coursework unit, whereby pupils will develop their knowledge of Human resources and understand the role of motivation in business success.
- Unit 16 In this unit you will learn about the stages of project management, and the type of skills a project manager should have. You will also learn why you need to monitor the progress of projects as it is vital to their successful completion and implementation.
