Bugsy Production
Last week the drama studio was transformed into a 1930’s speakeasy for a triumphant, sold-out run of the musical Bugsy Malone. This was the first Key Stage 3 show that we have run for many years and it really made us realise what we have been missing.
Under the firm direction of Kim Gallon and Sean Freeman, the cast of Year 7-9s wisecracked their way through an hour and a half of songs and scenes. The American accents were so authentic you thought you really were watching gangsters, dancers and wiseguys of depression era Chicago instead of Corby’s finest young people.
The lead actors were uniformly excellent, from Conlan Wilkinson and Bethany Price as Bugsy and Blousy, through to Jake Youdale and Nathan Hewett as Fat Sam and Dandy Dan. The supporting cast of dancers, actors and singers were also top class, with Rebecca Vince and Olivia Bonner keeping things particularly swinging with their singing.
Special mention must also go to Teresa Robertson’s outstanding Bugsy Band. A full live band, playing brilliantly, made such a difference to the overall feel of the show. Huge thanks to Dani-Louise Reddington, Annie Colyer, Ashley Malcolmson, Ethan Glover, Molly Took, Callum James, Malachia Faulkner and Jack Maxey. And of course, our new Music teacher Luke Roberts – a good initiation!
It was a really messy, joyous production and one that signposts a new and exciting journey for the Expressive and Performing Arts Faculty.
Well done to all!
