Scratch Programming Day

On Friday the 15th of June we were joined by ten Year 7 students from Kettering Buccleuch Academy for a day of programming using MITs introductory level Scratch software.

Eleven of our Year 8 students ably led the day's events, having prepared some presentations about the use and origins of Scratch. The first session was spent getting to grips with the interface of the software, although from the high level of skill on show, it was clear that all participants were very adept.

After a pleasant lunch break, the students got down to the serious business of creating either a game or an animation using the software. The pleasant twist was that competitors would receive more points if they teamed up with students from the other school.

In the event, several students did just that and after an hour and a half of serious focus, some excellent products emerged. With chivalry high on the agenda, our students were happy to award the lion's share of the certificates to Buccleuch, but it was clear that talent shone on both sides. Did we possibly glimpse the next Bill Gates?

Big congratulations to Susan Connor, Tania and the students for making the day such a success.
